Welcome to "JULIE TAYMOR, PAPA KEET AND YOU: STORYTELLING MAGIC FROM AFRICA TO FLORIDA TO BROADWAY", the curriculum developed by Camp Broadway for use with Panasonic's "Classroom of the Future" technology. This innovative prototype is being implemented for the first time ever by the Fort Pierce Magnet School of the Arts in Fort Pierce, a city in Central Florida. Inspired by musical THE LION KING and focusing on storytelling, the three-day curriculum for Grades 6-8 is interdisciplinary, teaching African geography, aspects of West African culture and history, language arts, drama and visual arts. This interactive and dynamic three-day curriculum is then followed by two days of live, real-time workshops on South African chanting and dance, led by cast members of the Broadway production of THE LION KING, who interact with the students from Panasonic’s studio in Secaucus, NJ through videoconferencing, using Panasonic’s technology and equipment. There is also a one-day 45-minute lesson plan for Grades 3-5 that does not incorporate technology, since Grades 3-5 are also participating in the two days of workshops.
To best understand this curriculum, we recommend you begin with the "Script" for Grades 6-8, which serves as an outline of the three days of lesson plans for the teachers; it fully explains when to proceed to the video links (referred to as "Tracks" in the Script) and fully explicates when and how to lead the discussions and conduct the classroom exercises. We hope you enjoy this interactive, dynamic and truly cutting edge curriculum! |
