The Johnny Mercer Foundation Programs
Camp Broadway® has proudly created In-School Residencies and teaching materials to help supplement existing curriculum.
THE JOHNNY MERCER FOUNDATION
In 2003-2004, Camp Broadway proudly teamed up with The Johnny Mercer Foundation to launch Accentuate The Positive, a national campaign introducing elementary school students to our Great American Songbook. Utilizing the songs of Johnny Mercer and his incredible roster of collaborators, this interactive curriculum illustrates how these classic songs stand the test of time, while focusing on creating a new way of thinking in the classroom. The program has also been offered throughout New York City since 2003 and has reached over 4000 children nationally. Our experienced teaching artists and the specially designed educational guide, LyricNOTES™: The Life and Works of Johnny Mercer, help students learn about Popular American Song, as well as how a song is born and how music and lyrics are conceived and written, while allowing teachers to fulfill National Standards in Education.
Lyric Writing Teaching Materials
The Johnny Mercer Foundation’s Accentuate the Positive program for elementary school children offers a FREE 32 page LyricNOTES activity guide for students and a FREE Guide to Teaching Lyric Writing DVD for teachers. Teachers can easily learn to teach lyric writing, featuring songs by Johnny Mercer, in a style that celebrates the Great American Songbook, an important part of America’s cultural heritage. In this DVD, teaching artist lyricists guide you through four lessons that you can easily do with your 3rd to 6th grade students, working closely with the Johnny Mercer Foundation’s LyricNOTES Activity Guide. Using the songs, Accentuate The Positive, Blues In The Night and Hooray For Hollywood, you will learn many experiential, fun lessons that address curriculum standards in literacy, writing, social studies and the arts. Download the DVD and watch it online, or order one to be sent to you through the mail. Our teaching artists will get you ready to teach songwriting to your students in record time!
