Too Marvelous for Words: A Johnny Mercer Centennial will be produced by The New York Pops Orchestra to celebrate the prolific American songwriter, Johnny Mercer! Over his storied 50 year career, Johnny Mercer founded Capitol Records, won four Academy Awards, wrote songs for 90 movies and wrote six Broadway musicals! Today, The Johnny Mercer Foundation carries on Johnny's legacy through initiatives like Accentuate the Positive, a classroom lyric writing program conducted by Camp Broadway staff nationwide. Now, we're bringing Johnny Mercer's spirit and music to you!
The Camp Broadway Kids will sing some of America's most beloved songs, including: "Accentuate the Positive", and "Moon River"! Too Marvelous for Words: A Johnny Mercer Centennial will be conducted by award-winning composer, Steven Reineke, who is enjoying his inaugural season as Music Director of The New York Pops. Most recently, Mr. Reineke led The Pops in NBC's nationwide telecast of the 2009 Macy's 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular. The Camp Broadway Kids will be joined by guest artists: Grammy® and Tony® Award nominee, Ann Hampton Callaway, opera star N'Kenge, and other surprise vocalists to celebrate Johnny Mercer's Centennial!
This special Camp Broadway experience will encompass Johnny Mercer's passion for music through intensive vocal training, dance instruction, a workshop in lyric writing and song development, in addition to a blocking and technical rehearsal with Steve Reineke and The Pops on Friday at Carnegie Hall! Participants will also receive a costume, lunches and dinner before the performance.
